ToolsSagicor double for MendesElan Mendes walked away a double-crown champion at the tenth Sagicor Junior Tennis Tournament when he teamed up with Ty Abraham to capture the senior boys' doubles title with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Ross Hackshaw and Aaron Soo Ping at the St Augustine Club late on Sunday. The top seeds ensured that their rivals did not post another upset, as they did in defeating the second-seeded pair of Jelani Davidson and Nabeel Mohammed in the semi-finals, by just allowing them three games en route to victory. Earlier in the day Mendes had defeated Abraham in three sets to capture the Boys' Under-18 title. In the senior girls' doubles finale, second seeds Emma Davis and Aryanne Hart required a super tiebreaker to get past Sarah Escalante and Bridgette Garcia, 6-2, 5-7, 10-5. Escalante and Garcia fancied their chances after ousting top seeds Juliet Campbell and Dominique Coutain, 6-2, 6-4, in their semi-final encounter. And they seem-ed well on the road to recovery by taking the second set 7-5 after conceding the first 2-6. But the second seeds held it together in the tiebreak to lift the title. It took another super tiebreaker to produce the winner of the boys' junior doubles crown after the contest was locked at one set apiece. But the third-seeded pair of Che Andrews and Clint Singh eventually prevailed 2-4, 4-2, 11-9, over top seeds Scott Hackshaw and Timothy Davis. Andrews was picking up his second title of the tournament after coming out on top in the Boys' Under-12 singles draw. And the girls' junior final was almost a replay of the boys' as the number one seeds fell at the last hurdle in yet another super tiebreaker. Fourth seeds Carissa Rodulfo and Cheyenne Chin Choy took championship honours with a 5-4 (5), 2-4, 10-4 win over the top pair of Lily Stauble and Emma-Rose Trestrail. |
