Sangre Grande, Quarters United to open Super 10
Sangre Grande will tackle newcomers Quarters United and Valencia Heat will oppose Petro Jazz when the 2013-2014 Mackeson Super 10 Basketball League tips off with a doubleheader tomorrow at the Southern Indoor Sports Arena, Pleasantville, Marabella.
The action gets going one hour before those matches with a parade of the teams from 4 p.m. before the first match from 5 p.m. featuring Grande and Quarters before the 7 p.m. encounter between Heat and Jazz. This year, organisers have increased prize money and introduced new teams to the fray.
The total cost of running the league is $700,000, an expense covered by the title sponsor, other corporate bodies and the Ministry of Sport.
The Men’s Open and Women’s Open competition will feature 13 and seven teams respectively, including defending champions Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and the Brian Chase Academy.
For the men, the winners’ cash prize has been increased from $50,000 to $100,000, while on the women’s side, the winners will take home at least $30,000, up from $15,000 last year.
The 13 teams in the men’s competition are the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, Valencia E, Sangre Grande, Maloney, newcomers Quarters United, Petro Jazz , Police, Caledonia, Shaq Attack, Diego Martin, Colours, UTT and Mackeson Lions.
On the women’s side, Brian Chase Academy leads the list that also includes Courts Horizon, TTDF, Police, Colours, Maloney and Quarters.
