SCOTT HACKSHAW clinched the under-14 doubles crown when the Barbados ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior Tournament continued on Thursday.
The Trinidad and Tobago player and Antiguan Cordell Williams Jr nosed out Grenadians Davell Thomas and Ukpioronfo Ikolo 7-6, 3-6, 10/8 in the final after dropping just seven games combined from their other two matches.
Hackshaw, who just over a week ago captured the under-14 title in the Catch National Junior Championships for the second straight year, had lost to Ikolo two days earlier in a singles quarterfinal encounter which lasted more than four hours.
Emma Davis, who also retained her “Catch” under-14 crown last week but failed to do likewise in the under-16 division when she lost in the final, was beaten in the semifinals of both singles and doubles.
“Catch” runner-up Adam Escalante, Flynn Von Waldau and Jordan Mukerji lost in the first round, while Aaron Chan and Edward Laquis were eliminated in the first and second round, respectively in the consolation draw after failing to qualify for the main draw.
Two-time defending national under-16 and 18 champ Nabeel Mohammed came up against seeded players and lost in the first round of both singles and doubles in the under-18 category. “Catch” under-16 runner-up Ryan Thomas exited in the first round of qualifying.
The second and final leg of this circuit serves off at 9 a.m. today with under-14 round-robin action at Trinidad Country Club, Maraval, and under-18 qualifying competition at Eddie Taylor Public Courts, King George V Park, St Clair.
