The Trinidad and Tobago men and women national Sevens rugby teams will fly out to Las Vegas, USA today to participate in the Las Vegas Invitational Sevens rugby tournament from January 23- 25.

The “Calypso Warriors”  are registered to play in the Las Vegas Invitational men and women Elite Sevens division. This division is for National teams not in the IRB HSBC World Sevens Series tournament and top professional and select sides from around the world.

The T&T women will battle with teams from Canada, Japan, France and the USA. The men will face national teams from Belgium, Mexico, Chile, Peru , Cayman Islands and select sides from Canada and USA. Kerchelle Hinkson (women), Mark Roberts and Aasan Lewis (men) will make their international Sevens rugby debuts in Las Vegas.

Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) president  Leslie Figaro said the Invitational Sevens is a premier  Sevens tournament. He pointed out that the Invitational—while separate from the prestigious IRB World Sevens Series USA Sevens—is an excellent opportunity for the T&T players.

According to Figaro, the T&T players “will benefit no end” from playing in the Las Vegas Invitational while at the same time being able to watch the world’s best sevens players and national teams compete in the USA Sevens—round four of the International Rugby Board (IRB) HSBC World Sevens series in  Las Vegas.

“The men’s team is preparing for the Hong Kong Sevens World Sevens Qualifier which will take place in March. To compete in the Las Vegas Invitational while at the same time watch Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Samoa, Argentina, Kenya etc. is of immense benefit. Our women are in preparation mode for important tournaments later this year. I expect the players to return even more motivated.”

Figaro extended thanks to the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago for supporting the national teams’ participation in Las Vegas. He also acknowledged the efforts of Jon Hinkin, the Las Vegas Invitational tournament director who handled all the arrangements for the T&T teams.
