Solozano, Hosein get semi-final call

By Roger Seepersad

Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 batsman Jeremy Solozano has been called up to the Trinidad and Tobago senior team for the Regional Four-day semi-final against Jamaica which bowls off next Thursday at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

The Hillview College and Queen’s Park Cricket Club left-handed opening batsman, Solozano, is one of two uncapped players in the T&T squad, the other being Solozano’s club teammate and another left-hand batsman Akeal Hosein, who represented the West Indies Under-19 side in the Youth World Cup last year.

Hosein’s West Indies Under-19 teammate wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo has also been added to the side after showing good form with the bat for his Premier Division Club Alescon Comets in recent matches.

Solozano, who played his first league match for the Parkites’ Championship Division team over the weekend, scoring 63 and 67 not out, comes into the national team for opening batsman Adrian Barath, who has had an inconsistent season so far with scores of 16, 15, 3, 8, 14 and 11 not out in his previous six first-class innings.

Solozano scored back-to-back hundreds for East Zone in the BG T&T InterZone Under-19 tournament, as well as two centuries for Hillview in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League.

Chairman of selectors Dudnath Ramkessoon said they saw a lot of talent and potential in the young players selected and believed it was time to make some changes to the squad especially in the batting department after the national team’s recent poor showing against Barbados and Jamaica in the regional first class tournament.

Keeping their places in the side were Lendl Simmons, Kjorn Ottley, Jason Mohammed and the skipper Denesh Ramdin.

The T&T bowling will be spearheaded by West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel with seamers Rayad Emrit and Marlon Richards also keeping their places.

Leg-spinners Imran Khan and Yannic Cariah and off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth will also make the trip to Jamaica.

Left-arm orthodox spinners Kavesh Kantasingh and Yannick Ottley could not be part of the side because of exams.

Of Solozano’s inclusion in the squad, Ramkessoon said: “We see a tremendous amount of talent in him and we wanted to expose him to the higher level. We know he has the ability to bat long and occupy the crease and it will be a good opportunity for him.

“We tried to get the best combination and after giving players numerous opportunities, we have decided to give other players a chance. The changes were also prompted by the recent poor showing especially in the batting.”

The chairman of selectors also noted that Katwaroo was included in the team as a batsman.

“He (Katwaroo) has been doing well with the bat. He played two matches this season and scored two half centuries so we felt it was time to give him another opportunity,” Ramkessoon added.
