South East Zone honours top cricketers

ISHWAR SOOKOONSINGH was named Cricketer of the Year when the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) South East Zone staged their annual prize distribution function on Saturday at Princes Town West Secondary School.

Playing for 2012 Club of the Year Blended Sports Club, an all-round Sookoonsingh nabbed the top honour by scoring 212 runs and capturing 61 wickets in the season.

He was also among the zone's Five Cricketers of the Year, which also included Javed Manphool (Cedar Hill United), Armando Patterson (Jenexcon Tableland), Sheldon Ramharack (Kildeer Youth Sports Club) and Arvin Jagessar (School Trace United).

West Indies team captain and wicket-keeper Merissa Aguilleira was Female Cricketer of the Year, while Al Small snagged the Youth "Cricketer of the Year honour.

Also sharing the spotlight were recently promoted umpires Zahid Bassarath  (Elite Panel of Umpires) and Denesh Ramdhanie (West Indies Cricket Board).

There were also awards for Coach of the Year Franklyn Patrick Harriot and Administrator of the Year, Ian Lalla.

Long-serving official Clarence Shaffrali was honoured with the zone's Long and Meritorious Service award, for which he received the Jenexcon Trophy.

Giving the feature address at the function was TTCB president Azim Bassarath, a former chairman of the zone, who congratulated the honorees and implored the cricketers to continue to strive for excellence.

Bassarath said officials must set the right example for their charges and called on players to take the responsibility of maintaining respect for authority and adherence to the rules of the game at all times.
