St Joseph’s edge Diego 2-1 to claim top honours in Francis Rivas

St Joseph’s Convent Port of Spain beat Diego Martin North Secondary prevailed two-best-of-three to capture the Don La Foucade trophy in the recently-concluded Francis Rivas Schoolgirls Windball Cricket League at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

It was the second “Francis Rivas” competition won by St Joseph’s, after they also beat Diego Martin and Holy Name Convent to win the season-opening one-day, round-robin tournament in March.

In the opening match, Sherlanna Ferret scored 20 runs and Elise Maingot added another 16 as St Joseph easily prevailed over Diego Martin, posting 61 runs for two wickets from eight overs, then restricting their opponents to 51-3. Diego Martin then scored a slender victory in the second match, thus forcing a third decisive match which St Joseph’s won to clinch the series 2-1.

The second game saw Maingot top-scoring with 18 runs to lead St Joseph to a paltry 46 for three in their eight overs. Led by Taylor Sampson (11), Diego Martin comfortably succeeded in chasing the winning target of 47, while losing five wickets.

With the teams even at 1-1, St Joseph’s won the third deciding third encounter with a slender three-run victory to take the series. Maingot got 13 runs and Ferret another 12 as St Joseph’s reached 65 for two.

And despite contributions of 17 and ten from Dinelle Soondar and Shania Bailram, respectively, Diego Martin were restricted to 62 for two in their turn at the crease.
