T&T XI reach Bradman Foundational final
The Trinidad and Tobago Invitational Under-16 team qualified for the Bradman Foundation final in Australia when they defeated India in their final preliminary 50 overs match Wednesday.
Needing an outright win against India, T&T scored 217 in their allotted overs.
Hero of the previous match, Jordan Warner, turned villain as he was out inside the first two overs without scoring. But the reliable Amir Jangoo and Keagan Simmons restored the innings with a patient 27.
T&T suffered a second slump as they fell to 127 for five, but Emilio Gopaul and Darel Cyrus topscored with 46 and 44 respectively to put the T&T innings back on a more solid footing. The last pair of Cavan Byrne (17) and Renaldo Mohammed (16), both not out, helped to take T&T to 217 for nine at the close of their innings.
T&T deprived India, also needing a win of the victory with some sharp fielding and tight bowling.
T&T spinners Siba Batoosingh (three for 24), Gopaul (two for 20 and Jonathan Bootan (one for 31) put the India batsmen under enough pressure to stifle their chase and book T&T’s spot in the final today against the in-form hosts Australia.
Speaking after the match, coach Kenny Benjamin said: “I am delighted we could make it to the final. My hope is that they have learnt enough to put in a great performance against the Australians. I do have a concern about the final ten overs on the field which is where we have shown our inexperience. But this tournament is an excellent platform for a career in international cricket and I am certain several members of this team are destined for international senior assignments in the near future. I just hope they are kept together and continue to engage in tournaments like this one, either at home or abroad.”
