T&T beaten again in Mexico
TRINIDAD and Tobago concluded the round-robin phase of the Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup without winning a set on Wednesday night in Mexico.
After going down to Mexico and the United States in the previous two nights, the top-ranked team in the English-speaking Caribbean lost 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 to the Dominican Republic.
As a result, T&T was the only one of the seven countries in the eighth edition of the tournament not to advance to the knockout phase.
Mexico pulled off a stunning upset as they nosed out defending champions United States, losers only once previously in their six other appearances, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 17-15 to finish at the top of Group B.
As a result, the 2007 champs moved straight into the tonight’s semi-finals, while the five-time champs were forced to come back last night and oppose Puerto Rico in the quarter-finals.
Argentina faced Dominican Republic in the other quarterfinal after missing out on the opportunity to move straight into the last four by losing 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 against fellow South Americans Brazil.
The final will take place tomorrow night and the highest placing team not already qualified for next year’s FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) World League, will earn a ticket to the World League Qualification Challenge Event.
