T&T beaten in NORCECA quarters
TRINIDAD and Tobago were beaten in the quarter-finals when the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Women’s Continental Volleyball Championships continued Thursday night in Ohama, Nebraska, USA.
After advancing to the knockout phase of a senior tournament at this level for the first time, the five-time Caribbean champions lost 27-25, 25-11, 25-22 against Canada in a battle for a place in last night’s semi-finals.
However, despite failing to win a set in the 77-minute contest, this country had the game’s leading scorer as the France-based Darlene Ramdin notched 13 points. And compatriot Channon Thompson, the Poland-based youngster chipped in with ten, one less than the contribution of Canada’s top-scorer Love Tabitha.
The tournament will conclude today with three matches, beginning with T&T opposing Mexico for fifth place in the nine-nation tournament at 4 p.m. The bronze-medal match will take place two hours later and will be followed by the final.
The winners will qualify for the Grand Champions Cup in Japan in November.
In Thursday night’s other quarter-final, Puerto Rico whipped Mexico 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 to set up a meeting after press time last night against the Dominican Republic.
The other semi-final was between Canada and defending champs the United States. The Dominican Republic and four-time champs United States moved straight into the last four after impressively winning their respective round-robin groups on Wednesday night.
