TRINIDAD and Tobago failed to advance to the knockout phase when the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Under-18 Female Volleyball Championship continued yesterday in Costa Rica.
After losing the opening match in straight sets to the hosts the night before, the three-time defending Caribbean champions needed to defeat Guatemala to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
But it was not to be and T&T lost the Group A encounter 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 in just over an hour.
And as was the case when they lost against the Costa Ricans, this country’s skipper Reann Young was the game’s leading scorer with 12 points.
When the round-robin phase concluded last night, the two group winners with the best points’ ratio advanced straight into tomorrow night’s semi-finals. The winner of the other group and the three runners-up will have to come back tonight to play quarter-finals.
After resting when the tournament served off on Wednesday, the Dominican Republic scored the most commanding victory of the tournament when they outclassed St Lucia 21-4, 21-2, 21-4 in Group C.
And in Group B action, Mexico, also on a bye on the opening day, brushed aside Honduras 25-9, 25-8, 25-7.
Costa Rica opposed Guatemala, Dominican Republic faced Puerto Rico and Mexico tackled defending champs United States to determine the group winners last night.
The United States has dominated to such an extent that they have captured the gold medal in seven of the eight editions of the biennial tournament. Their only defeat came two years after the inaugural edition when Puerto Rico stunned them in the 2000 final.
This year’s final is scheduled for Sunday night.
