Trinidad and Tobago women’s head coach Glen “Fido” Francis says he expects a very tough match when the national women’s team open their campaign against hosts Argentina today at the Fourth Women’s Pan American Cup in Mendoza, Argentina.
The team had their first training session yesterday morning, and it looks like the T&T stickwomen will have to adapt to the weather, as well as the conditions.
“We play at 9 p.m. and it can drop to as low as ten degrees Celsius, so it wil be very cold for us,” Francis, a former national goalkeeper, said.
Francis also said taking on the number two ranked team in the world will be another challenge.
“We are going to be very compact and defensive and play on the counter attack,” Francis said, adding that the players’ mood is good.
The T&T team is being led by captain Alanna Lewis, and includes ten other players who were part of the T&T squad that ended fifth out of six teams in the FIH World League Round Two qualifiers held in Rio de Janeiro in March.
Lewis will be supported by Blair Wynne, Avion Ashton, Teresa Lezama and Zene Henry. The skipper will also count on the experience of Brianna Govia, Elise Olton, Kayla Brathwaite and goalkeeper Jeneille Carrington, while Kwylan Jaggassar and Brittney Hingh round out the experienced players in the T&T line up.
In Argentina, the 26th world ranked T&T will do battle with Guyana (56th) then Canada (23rd) in Pool A round-robin play after their inaugural match versus the hosts.
The winners of this tournament will qualify for next year’s FIH Hockey World Cup to be held in The Hague, Netherlands, while the top six teams will qualify for the 2017 Women’s Pan American Cup.
Teams placing seventh and eighth will be demoted to the 2015 Women’s Pan American Challenge.
