T&T tackle Costa Rica in NORCECA tourney
TRINIDAD and Tobago will oppose Costa Rica at 4 p.m. in the first of three matches when the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Women’s Continental Championships continue today in Ohama, Nebraska, USA.
The five-time Caribbean champions were on a bye when the tournament served off at the Ralston Arena yesterday.
There are three teams in each of the three groups and the round-robin phase of the tournament will conclude tomorrow with T&T tackling the Dominican Republic in the first of three matches at 4 p.m.
Cuba, Mexico and hosts the United States are in Group B, while Group C consists of Canada, Puerto Rico and St Lucia.
The two group winners with the best points ratio will move straight into Friday night’s semi-finals, while the winner of the other group and the three runners-up will contest the quarter-finals the night before.
The final is scheduled for Saturday night and the champions will qualify for the Grand Champions Cup in Japan later this year.
Cuba is the most successful nation in this bi-ennial tournament, which inaugurated way back in 1969, with 13 titles. However the United States, ranked No. 2 in the world, have won four of the last six gold medals, including in the last edition in 2011.
At No. 33 in the world, T&T are the second lowest ranked team in the tournament. Debutants St Lucia, champs of the Eastern Caribbean Zone, are unranked.
