T&T team set for CAC junior chess

Javanna Smith and Mahendra Singh will lead a Trinidad and Tobago squad of 13 to the Central American and Caribbean Youth Chess tournament in San Jose, Costa Rica next week.
Smith, now a Woman Candidate Master (WCM), is the national junior and senior and under-16 female champion, and a multiple CAC (Caribbean and Central American) bronze winner. She is also a past Carifta Under-16 gold and silver medallist.
Singh is the current Boys Under-16 champion and the national junior runner up.
The impressive cast also includes national Under-18 boys champions Vandoff Smith and Under-14 champion Joshua Johnson, himself a CAC silver and bronze medal winner, who has also taken Carifta gold and silver.
The list also sees national Girls Under-14 champ Gabriella Johnson and runner up Shannon Yearwood, Della Marie Walcott (national Girls Under-14, Carifta Under-12 gold and former CAC gold medallist) and national Under-10 champions Sean Yearwood (boys) and WCM Shemila James (girls), both CAC medallists.
Zurich Smith (Under-14), Daniel Bhola (Under-14), Kyron Agostini and Chaya Johnson (Girls Under-8) are the other T&T competitors.
T&T will come up against players from Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Barbados, Jamaica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and hosts Costa Rica.
T&T Chess Association (TTCA) treasurer Mala Agostini and several parents will accompany the team.
