T&T youths looking strong
TRINIDAD and Tobago made an impressive start to the Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships yesterday in Guyana.
The boys’ Under-11 team trounced Guyana 3-0, while the both under-13 teams also comfortably won their open fixtures in the round-robin phase of the tournament.
Jasher De Gannes, who will be a member of the senior team in the Caribbean Championships in St Lucia at the end of the month, led the way as the girls cruised past Barbados 3-0.
The Tobagonian defeated Janae Lewis 11-6, 11-8, 11-6, while Ray J Thomas dismissed Jazei Griffith 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 and Shaneka Johnson halted Kenady King 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.
The other teams in the draw are both from Guyana and their No. 1 outfit beat No. 2 3-0 in the other fixture.
Emme Arias prevailed twice (11-5, 11-8, 11-5 over Jeandry Matilda and 11-6, 15-17, 11-7, 11-7 over Jean Claude Hoek) as T&T’s under-13 boys were 3-1 winners over Aruba.
Jakeem Welch got the other point with an 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 triumph over Ethan De Lange, but Brandon Beharry was beaten 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5 by Hoek.
Barbados also beat Aruba 3-1 and prevailed by the exact score against Guyana 2, 3-0 losers against Guyana 1 in their other fixture.
Derron Douglas stopped Kaysan Ninvalle 11-2, 11-6, 12-14, 11-6, Brandon Lee Young took down Brandon Jaikaran 14-12, 11-3, 11-5 and Messiah Walcott was an 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 winner over Yeudistir Persaud as T&T’s Under-11 boys shut out Guyana 2, 3-0.
The second team of the host country did manage to score a 3-0 upset over their No. 1 team, 3-0 winners over Barbados in their other fixture yesterday.
There are just three teams in the girls’ Under-11 draw and the team comprised of players from Dominican, Aruba and Barbados, were 3-1 winners over Guyana. Shurjah Welch, Ackayla Lucas, Shreya Maharaj and Shyana Samnarine make up the T&T outfit.
The team events will be followed by doubles and singles.
