T&T outclass Barbados in qualifier

By Kern De Freitas

Trinidad and Tobago made home advantage count yesterday in their NACRA Rugby World Cup qualifier, whipping Barbados 32-3 at St Mary's Ground in St Clair.

Winger James Phillip came up big with two tries and flanker Wayne Kelly, lock Jamal Clark and substitute Kurt Quashie one each, while Justin McLean converted twice. T&T earned a 15-3 half-time lead, spoiled only by a penalty from Barbados winger Kevin Carter.

But T&T kept the visitors defending in the second half and Phillip added to his and T&T's tallies, before Clark and Quashie chipped in to ensure there was no chance of an upset.

T&T looked superior from the first possession, even though they gave the ball away in the first minute.

Phillip missed out on the early try, but the home team went ahead through McLean's penalty.

T&T's attacking pressure paid off, Kelly getting away and streaking down the sideline after a defensive error to lusty cheers from a modest home crowd.

Barbados got off the mark with Carter's penalty, but Phillip had a try in the 40th, carting home another loose ball as the visitors failed to cover, and McLean converted to put T&T in full control by the half-time whistle.

T&T's defence had held well in the first period, but they had two fumbles in the second half but Barbados could not capitalise.

Kelly had to be replaced by Quashie early in the second half, but T&T kept their offence going.

Phillip continued to be the threat down the left flank, and he got his second try from a close scrum, pushing off his tackler to complete the score before McLean converted.

Clark got in on the act in the 55th, before Quashie rounded out the scoring on the hour, making use of yet another loose ball.

T&T dropped the ball in defence late on, but their defenders piled on the pressure to ensure Barbados were kept at bay.
