T&T's Solozano tops WICB U-19 batting averages

Trinidad and Tobago opener Jeremy Solozano was the leading batsman in the Regional Under-19 Three-day Championships in Barbados after scoring 542 runs in five matches at an average of 90.33.

The 17-year-old, who was named the most promising youth cricketer at the Queen's Park Cricket Club cricket awards on Friday night, hit two centuries in the tournament —160 not out against Guyana and 128 against Leewards—as T&T finished third in the six-team competition.

The left-hander was the only batsman to cross the 500-run mark.

Akeem Saunders from the Leeward Islands was second on the list of top batsmen with 412 runs while Barbados' Shai Hope was third with 405 runs.

Leeward Islands captain Saunders had the highest score of the tournament—167 against T&T at Kensington Oval.

Hope, who is the Barbados skipper, scored three centuries—101 versus the Windward Islands, 141 not out against the Leewards and 104 not out versus T&T.

Jamaica off-spinner Oshane Walters and Guyana's left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie were the leading bowlers in the competition with 27 wickets each.

Walters' best figures were six for 40, and he ended with an average of 11.19.

Motie's 27 wickets came at an average of 15.22, with his best figures of seven for 31.

Third on the list was Windward Islands left-arm spinner Larry Edward, who took 22 wickets at 14 runs each.

The leading fast bowler in the three-day competition was Barbadian left-arm swing bowler Darn- ell Greenidge, who picked up 18 wickets at an average of 13.11 to be joint fifth on the overall list.

Another left-arm pacer, Preston McSween of the Windwards, impressed with his pace and swing to take 17 wickets (average 20.00)

Windward Islands off-spinner Kenneth Dember had the best bowling figures in the competition, taking eight for 44 in the second innings of the final round against Jamaica.

Dember grabbed six for 45 in the first innings to end the match with figures of 14 for 89.

The leading wicket-keeper was T&T's Nicholas Pooran. He had 14 dismissals in five matches —11 catches and three stumpings. Hollis Blair of Windwards came in second with 13 catches.
