T&T stickwomen get first victory

Trinidad and Tobago women's national hockey team earned their first victory of the second round of the World Hockey League in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil yesterday.

T&T defeated the hosts 3-1 to earn their first points and leapfrog the South Americans into fifth place in the six-team standings. T&T's Avion Ashton opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a field goal, before Blair Wynne flicked home the second from a penalty corner in the 22nd.

After the break, Brazilian captain Patricia Boos pulled one back for the hosts off a penalty corner. But a 70th minute field goal by T&T's Krizia Lane put the contest beyond doubt. The T&T stickwomen will complete their World Hockey League campaign tomorrow against the USA.
