T&T tackle Argentines

TRINIDAD and Tobago will oppose the powerful Argentines when the Men's Pan American Volleyball Cup continues today in Dominican Republic.

The seventh edition of the tournament got going yesterday and T&T came up against the hosts in the final of four matches at 7 p.m.

Canada are the other team in Group A and the Caribbean champions will face the north Americans in their final round-robin match at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Brazil, Mexico, United States and Venezuela are in Group B. The winners of each group will advance directly into Friday night's semi-finals, while the second and third-placed teams will be involved in quarter-finals the night before. The final is scheduled for Saturday night.

T&T are not expected to be contenders as they are ranked 33rd in the world, behind only the Dominican Republic (No. 46) in this tournament. Defending champs Brazil are the World No. 1 team, while the United States, winners of this tournament in four of the six editions, are next at No. 5.

The Argentines are also in the top ten in the world (No. 8) and the South Americans are followed by Canada (No. 16), Venezuela (#18) and 2007 champs Mexico (#23).

T&T have finished sixth in their three previous appearances and the team includes familiar faces, Marc Honore, Sean Morrison, Saleem Ali and skipper Nolan Tash.

This country will also be involved in the women's edition of the tournament, serving off Thursday in Mexico.
