The Trinidad and Tobago Women's team suffered their first defeat of their FIH World League Round One campaign when they went under 2-0 to Uruguay yesterday.
At the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua, T&T gave away possession at crucial points and failed to capitalise on their chances as their record went to one win and one loss from their first two matches.
In an evenly contested first 35 minutes of play, T&T's captain Alana Lewis saw her team give up hard-fought parity after another of Uruguay's Betina Bocca Peixoto's searching , twisting runs resulted in a penalty when she collided with T&T defender Kwylan Jagassar. Peixoto duly obliged, slotting the ball high to T&T's goalkeeper Petal Derry's upper right hand corner two minutes from the break.
Earlier, T&T 's best efforts to get on the scoreboard were left to Kritstin Thompson. But twice, first in the 27thminute from a Tamara De Nobriga lay-off, then two minutes later, from a square pass from Blair Wynne--the squad's main engine--Thompson scuffed shots in the penalty area with just the Uruguayan keeper to beat.
Uruguay did not suffer any problem with accuracy and with Peixoto and the incisive Manuela Dupuy running the plays in midfield, T&T suffered their first blow just before the half.
When the second period resumed, Uruguay took advantage of a penalty corner for Maria Ache to loop the ball over the onrushing Derry for a 2-0 scoreline after 41 minutes.
When T&T earned their first penalty corner in the 55thminute, the local girls could not replicate the Uruguayans' efficiency and two subsequent penalty corners suffered the same fate. With time winding down, T&T could not find the equalising goals and must reset for their next game against the Venezuelans tomorrow.
