Tallawahs make sure of semis spot
The Jamaica Tallawahs handed the Barbados Tridents their third consecutive loss in the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20, defeating the Kieron Pollard-led side by six wickets at Sabina Park, Jamaica yesterday.
The Tridents were restricted to 113 for four off their 20 overs on a slow Sabina Park surface before the home team cruised to their target, reaching 114 for four off 18.1 overs thanks to an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 49 between Jermaine Blackwood and Andre Russell.
Like the Bajans, the Jamaican batsmen also found the conditions to be tough, slipping to 65 for four off 12.1 overs with Chris Gayle, Ahmed Shehzad, Chadwick Walton and Danza Hyatt all back in the pavilion as the required rate climbed up to more than six runs an over in the last six.
Shakib Al Hasan bowled three overs for 11 runs, while Jason Holder bowled one for three and Rayad Emrit sent down two for just five as they built up some pressure, but it was all in vain in the end as Blackwood and Russell took their team over the line.
Russell hit 27 off 17 balls with two sixes and two fours, while Blackwood, playing his first match, hit 21 off 30 with two fours.
Earlier, Dwayne Smith was the only Bajan batsman who came to terms with the pitch, scoring 52 off 53 balls with one six and four fours to keep his team in the game.
His opening partner Raymon Reifer contributed 22 to the cause while Shoaib Malik chipped in with 14 and Ashley Nurse hit 15 to boost the score but the Jamaica spinners used the conditions to their advantage.
Man-of-the-Match Muttiah Muralitharan snatched three for 12 from his four overs to keep the batsmen quiet while Nikita Miller chipped in with one for 19 off his four.
