Thompson, Gillette, Faure set records on final night

Three swimmers broke a record each in the final session of the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago's (ASATT) Open National Short Course Swimming Champion-ships at the St Michael's Swimming Pool Facility in San Fernando Sunday evening.

Tidal Wave Aquatics' Vrisnelit Faure splashed to a new standard for the Girls 8 & under 200-metre individual medley (IM) when she lowered her preliminary effort (3:06.69) with a finals time of 3:03.14.

Then Luke Gillette of Marlins erased the 2009 record of Kael Yorke of 32.54 seconds and established a new standard of 32.27 seconds for the Boys 8 & under 50m freestyle.

Blue Dolphins swimmer Cherelle Thompson broke the Girls 15-17 record twice while becoming the first T&T female swimmer to qualify for the 2010 World Short Course Championships to be held in Dubai in mid-December.

In the final of the Women's 50m freestyle, Thompson erased the 1995 15-17 age group national record of Olympian Siobhan Cropper of 25.88 seconds when she stopped the clock in 25.83 seconds.

But the swim was short of the 25.65-second Worlds qualifying time.

In a time trial her coach Edmund Pouchet requested at the end of the programme, the CAC and Commonwealth Games swimmer produced a 25.61-second swim to achieve the Worlds standard and lower the national record.

The ASATT December Invitational is the next event on the swimming calendar and is scheduled for December 16-19 at the Marlins Pool in Westmoorings.
