Three t-t gold medals for T&T
TRINIDAD and Tobago dominated the team events of the Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships by winning three of the four gold medals Sunday night in Guyana.
Only the girls’ Under-11 outfit of Shurjah Welch, Ackayla Lucas, Shreya Maharaj and Shyana Samnarine missed out when they were beaten 3-1 by Guyana for the gold.
In the boys’ equivalent event, T&T, represented by Brandon Lee Young, Messiah Walcott, Aaron Amoroso and Derron Douglas, crushed Barbados, Aruba and Guyana 2 3-0 and whipped Guyana 3-1 for the title.
After a three-way tie, Guyana 2 ended up with the silver medal, while Guyana edged Barbados for bronze.
T&T’s under-13 girls’ Ray J Thomas, Chelsea Fong, Shanekah Johnson and Jasher De Gannes, who will be a member of the team for the senior Caribbean Championships at the end of the month in St Lucia, were perfect as they dispatched Barbados and both Guyana teams 3-0. Barbados copped the silver medal, and Guyana 1, bronze.
After Barbados, Guyana 1 and T&T finished deadlocked with three wins and one defeat apiece, this country’s quartet of Joshua Maxwell, Jakeem Welch, Brandon Beharry and Roberto Johnson, were declared Under-13 champs because of a superior points ratio.
T&T beat both Barbados and Guyana 2 3-0 and were 3-1 winners over Aruba, but were beaten 3-1 by Guyana 1. They collected the silver medal, and Barbados, the bronze.
The doubles events were contested yesterday and the tournament will conclude today with singles.
