Time running out for QPCC

Got it covered: Queen’s Park Cricket Club batsman Jonathan Augustus plays a defensive shot during his innings against Caldrac Club on the first day of their Premier Division match at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain last Saturday. Augustus scored 103 as the Parkites won first innings points. But if they are keep the league trophy, the Parkites, who are fifth on 140 points, will have to win their remaining three matches starting with their ninth round encounter against former champions First Citizens Clarke Road United at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, starting today at 10 a.m.

The Parkites will also be keeping a close eye on the leaders Moosai (159 points), who are in action against Esmeralda Sports at Esmeralda Recreation Ground this weekend.

PowerGen, who also have 159 points, are scheduled to play Wanderers this weekend but should get 24 points from the encounter, with Wanderers expected to forfeit the match, as they have done with all their games this season.

With that in mind, Moosai will be under pressure to get an outright win this weekend to keep alive their title ambitions.

At the Oval, the Parkites will be boosted by the presence of Trinidad and Tobago players Adrian Barath, Amit Jaggernauth, Akeal Hosein, Shannon Gabriel and skipper Justin Guillen, who will all line up to face Clarke Road.

Young opening batsman Jeremy Solozano, who earned his first call-up to the senior Trinidad and Tobago team for the Regional Four-Day semi-final against Jamaica next week, is expected to take the field for Queen’s Park’s Championship Division team this weekend.

Jaggernauth, Hosein and Gabriel are also in the T&T squad that will leave for Jamaica on Tuesday.

Queen’s Park will not be banking on their national players alone however. Jonathan Augustus and Petrock Nicholas have been in good form with the bat for the Port of Spain club this season, with Augustus coming off a century against Caldrac Club in the previous round of the competition last weekend.

That match ended in a draw after rain interrupted the game on the second day.

Nicholas also as a century in the league this season and has been one of the Parkites’ leading run scorers.

The Parkites’ bowling will have a tougher test against Clarke Road, who are also unbeaten this season.

Ranga Latchana, Anthony Bramble and Ryan Ramdass are Clarke Road’s leading batsmen this season with Latchana and Ramdass scoring two centuries each.

It will be a good opportunity for the West Indies fast bowler Gabriel and T&T off-spinner Jaggernauth to get some form with the ball ahead of the Regional four-day semifinal against Jamaica which bowls off on Thursday at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

In other matches this weekend, seventh place Merry Boys tackle fourth place Alescon Comets at Diego Martin Recreation Ground and that game should also feature some national players looking to get some form ahead of the Jamaica semi.

Lendl Simmons, Rayad Emrit and Marlon Richards should be in the Merry Boys line-up while Steven Katwaroo and Imran Khan will lead the charge for Comets.

All matches bowl off at 10 a.m. today and continue tomorrow from   9.30 a.m.
