Tobago Carnival Regatta sets sail todayCarnival continues on the water today with the Tobago Carnival Regatta sailing off at Pigeon Point, Tobago from 9 a.m. The regatta, dubbed "A Festival of Wind" and hosted by Tobago Regattas Limited, will run until Sunday with a lay day on Saturday. There will be competitors in several classes, including kiteboarding, windsurfing, Optimist dinghies (for children aged 7-14), laser and 420 dinghy classes and bumboats. Overall, 90 children from sailing schools at Vessigny, Point Fortin, Carenage, San Fernando have so far been confirmed to participate in the regatta, as well as 30 from Tobago. The children in the novice category will learn the basics about sailing, including racing safety. Over 50 kiters, 23 windsurfers and 15 bumboats had already been registered for the event up to press time yesterday in conditions tailor-made for sailing. Winds were blowing at up to 19 knots yesterday, which organisers said could get up to 22 knots by Sunday. The Optimists will sail near the jetty at Pigeon Point Heritage Park, while the other sailors will take to the waters at Tobago Marine Park. The regatta is being sponsored by Tobago House of Assembly, Tourism Development Company, the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago and bmobile, and is also supported by Tobago's Fisheries department. |
