With three rounds of matches to go in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League, one thing is almost certain. Defending champions Presentation College Chaguanas will most likely not retain their crown. Instead, former winners Hillview College and Carapichaima East Secondary are fighting down to the wire to see who will win the trophy.
Heading into the seventh round of matches today, Hillview (94 points) hold a four-point lead over Carapichaima (90) and if the two sides continue their winnings ways, the battle could go down to the wire.
For now, Hillview's assignment is to get past Iere High School at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado today.
Iere have been struggling this season, losing five of their six matches and are glued to the bottom of the ten team standings with 32 points.
They are in serious danger of being demoted to the Championship Division and that could be the motivation they need to step up their game against Hillview, who will be looking to get some bonus points to put some more distance between themselves and Caps.
Caps gained two points more than Hillview in the previous round of matches to cut the lead to four, but they should be in for a challenge today as they come up against Trinity College East at Squadron Ground in Trincity.
Stephan Wharwood starred for Trinity in their previous win, taking a six-wicket haul and scoring an unbeaten 38. He was helped by an unbeaten 68 from Keegan Simmons.
Caps skipper Justin Joseph is also in good form. He took a five-for in their latest win and will be looking to continue his good form today.
Though they are unlikely to lift the trophy, the defending champs, Pres, still have a lot to play for.
Avoiding relegation will be their biggest motivation at this stage and their win over Union Claxton Bay last week went a long way to lifting them out of the relegation zone.
All-rounder Bryan Charles starred in that win, taking two wickets and scoring an unbeaten 44.
Pres face Princes Town West at Princes Town today.
In the Championship Division, Vishnu Boys Hindu College are runaway leaders with a perfect record of six wins in six matches.
They will put their perfect record on the line today when they face St Mary's College at Serpentine Road, St Clair.
