‘Unacceptable’

Red Steel slip to 2nd after loss to Hawksbills

Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel skipper Dwayne Bravo lamented his side’s batting as the Antigua Hawksbills snapped a nine-game losing streak, stretching back to last season, to win their first points of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League campaign yesterday.

The Hawksbills won by five wickets with nine balls to spare to post their first victory of the season, reaching 114 for five in 18.3 overs.

T&T slipped to second spot in the standings on 12 points, the same as the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs who are at the top because of a superior net run rate.

Bravo blamed his batsmen for the final outcome.

“ I think our batting display today was unacceptable, “ he said, “ I told the guys today that the Hawskbills have nothing to lose and this is where a  team is most dangerous. I don’t know. I don’t know what to say...., the way that our batting  performed, we need to take a rain-check of what we are doing so everybody needs to put their hands up for the blame for this game, the way we have played today,”

Bravo said the Red Steel couldn’t make such low scores and expect to win but “I think  I want to give credit to all my bowlers the way they  fought”.

Bravo and company started their innings positively enough, tallying 38 for two in the first six overs despite the loss of opener Kevin O’Brien for duck on the second ball of the innings and Ross Taylor when the score was 29.

Evin Lewis steadied the innings with  38 runs from 36 balls, batting until the 15th over when he was one of Hawskbills’ spinner Justin Athanaze (two for 25) two victims Athanaze began the decline of the T&T innings, a slide that accounted for the last six wickets for only 25 runs, setting the Antigua-based team 113 to win.

Hawksbills captain Marlon Samuels (23), who struck an unbeaten century in a losing effort against the Amazon Warriors,  and the experienced David Hussey (24) laid the base for their team’s first successful chase.

But with Hussey departing on 84 for three in the 17th over, still 30 runs adrift, the Hawskbills’ unfamiliarity with winning made them shaky.

Pacer Sheldon Cottrell was sent in to pinch hit  but he only made three before O’Brien uprooted his stumps. But Carlos Brathwaite’s  three consecutive sixes in 20 not out immediately on his entry steadied the Hawksbills’ slightly ruffled feathers.
