ToolsUnited States crush T&TTRINIDAD and Tobago were mauled by the most dominant team in the history of the tournament when the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Under-20 Girls' Continental Volleyball Championship served off Tuesday in Nicaragua. The four-time defending champions, who have won five of the seven editions of the biennial tournament, took only 57 minutes to dismiss the Caribbean champs 25-10, 25-10, 25-8. T&T needed to bounce back and win yesterday to have any chance of advancing to tomorrow's quarter-finals, but that was very unlikely as they came up against another NORCECA powerhouse, 2000 champs Cuba. Cost Rica began the tournament with a bang when they crushed Antigua 25-9, 25-9, 25-7. The other team in Group A is hosts Nicaragua. Dominican Republic, runner-up in the last four editions of the tournament, were also resting yesterday as Mexico slammed Guatemala 25-11, 25-11, 25-3 in their group (Group B). T&T will be on a bye today when the round-robin phase of the tournament concludes. The two group winners with the best points ratio will advance straight to Saturday night's semifinals, while the winner of the other group and the three runners-up will have to play quarters tomorrow night. The bronze and gold medal matches will be contested on Sunday night and all the winners of all three medals will qualify for next year's World Junior Championships in Thailand. |
