Untouchables, winner of Trinidad and Tobago’s inaugural leg of the Guinness Street Football Challenge in 2011, staked a claim to regain supremacy when they captured this year’s North-East Zonal title at the Constantine Basketball Court in Macoya last Saturday.
The winners capped an unbeaten run with goals from Andrew Tinto in the fifth and Shane Hospedales in the 11th minute of play to defeat Group D winner, Stars FC by a 2-1 margin in the final and clinch their second zonal title in four years.
Untouchables began their campaign in Group B with a 4-1 win over Corner Boys with Hospedales notching a brace and Tinto and Mike Marcano scoring one apiece. In their next match they got some help from their opponent as an own goal and another Tinto item led them to a 2-0 blanking of Corner Boys.
The next team to succumb under Untouchables’ pressure was Somebody. An own goal in the fifth, a strike from Tinto in the seventh, and a 14th minute effort from Kellon Brisco saw them secure a 3-0 victory in securing the lone semi-final spot from the group.
In their semi-final encounter they came up against Bless Youths, winners of Group A. And it was here they faced their first real test. Hospedales was on target in the fifth minute to give them the lead but Kevin Mulchan would level the score in the dying stage of the match to send it to a penalty shootout. They eventually would prevail 3-2 in the ensuing spot kicks decider.
Stars FC emerged from their group with a two-one win-loss record to set up a semi-final showdown with Group C winner, Cruz, who had come through their round robin fiztures with an unblemished record.
But Stars FC proved to be too hot to handle as a Warren Alexander double, in the first and 14th minutes, propelled them to the final. In the end, Untouchables lived up to its name by being untouchable.
