W Connection, Central clash in Couva

There are just eight more chances to prevent W Connection from winning the 2013-2014 Digicel Pro League, and chasing Central FC have one of them tonight.

The third and final round of eight matches in the local professional football league begins tonight and features an intriguing clash of the top two--season-long front-runners W Connection and Central FC--from eight o’clock at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

The top-of-the-table clash will be preceded by a meeting between San Juan Jabloteh and North East Stars.

The last time W Connection and Central met was on February 11 when two goals in the final 10 minutes by Surinamese teenager Demitri Apai and Joevin Jones rescued a 2-2 draw for W Connection, after the Sharks built a two-goal advantage through February’s Player of the Month Willis Plaza and Jason Marcano. In December, W Connection won 1-0 through a late goal from Surinamese midfielder Stefano Rijsell.

W Connection (37 points) lead a group of three chasing teams by eight points and still have a match in hand. However, Central go into tonight’s clash with momentum and are unbeaten in 11 matches since W Connection edged them 1-0 in early December.

During that run they have won five times, including twice over champions Defence Force, and drew six matches as well. The streak saw the Sharks move up from sixth to second.

W Connection, though, still have the best record in the Pro League this season, and have lost just once when going down 2-1 to Point Fortin Civic on February 1.

Since then, the league leaders have dropped points by drawing with Central FC (2-2) and Caledonia AIA (0-0), but won 2-0 over bottom team St Ann’s Rangers one week ago.
