W Connection still unbeaten

W Connection remained unbeaten after scoring a 1-0 win over Central FC on Saturday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
Connection have a maximum 18 points from six matches played, after scoring wins over St Ann’s Rangers (7-0), Police (1-0), San Juan Jabloteh (3-2), North East Stars (2-0), Point Fortin Civic FC (2-0) and Central FC (1-0).
W Connection end the first round with matches against last year’s runner-up Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA and champions Defence Force--neither of which have yet hit top form.
Stefano Rijssel hadn’t played for some months, but the Suriname forward celebrated his return from injury with a 78th minute winner against the Sharks.
Rijssel, a second half substitute, broke the deadlock when he smashed a strike past goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams for the 1-0 score. Williams, a former Connection stalwart, had little chance after a poor clearance by his defence allowed Rijssel to pick up inside the area.
Meanwhile, stop-and-start Defence Force had a good day, and came from a goal down to beat Point Fortin Civic Centre 3-1 at Mahaica Oval. Since winning their opening three matches of the season, newcomers Civic have lost four straight. Champs Defence Force have moved up from seventh to fourth.
