W Connection turns 15
Pro League leaders W Connection will very much like to celebrate their 15th anniversary as a professional club by gaining a full three points against the bottom team, St Ann’s Rangers when they meet today in the Pro League from 7 p.m. at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
W Connection will begin a year of planned activities in celebration of their 15th anniversary with a thanksgiving mass on Sunday at the St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Couva.
The club invites members of the public, all past players and members of the football fraternity to join them in the thanksgiving. The service begins at 4.30 p.m. and the club has asked that guests be seated by 4.15 p.m.
It was in January 1999 that Connection, formally a “fete match team”, lunged bravely into the professional arena when the now defunct Professional Football League (PFL) was formed. That year they won the FA Trophy and defended it in 2000 as well. W Connection have since won four Pro League titles, three FA trophies, six First Citizens Cups, four Pro Bowls, two Toyota Classics, three Caribbean Club Championships and a few Digicel Charity Shields.
A founding member in 2002 of the present TT Pro League – which came out of the PFL- W Connection are the second most successful local club behind Defence Force, winners of 22 national league titles and also twice CONCACAF champions.
Not surprisingly, Defence Force are defending Pro League champions, while W Connection are currently in the lead in this season’s edition. Fifteen years and over 30 major titles later, the “Savonnetta Boys” are a benchmark of local and regional football.
The David John-Williams owned club is currently unbeaten after nine Pro League matches, and has already captured the Digicel Charity Shield, the Toyota Classic and prestigious FA Trophy titles.
Connection, comfortably sit at the top of the Pro League standings with 23 points.
