Water Polo teams head to Carifta

READY TO PLAY: T&T’s U-16 team heads to Curacao to compete in Carifta Water Polo Championships tourney today in Willemstad.

Trinidad and Tobago’s junior water polo athletes will be touching down in Curacao to compete in the Carifta Water Polo Championships tourney in Willemstad today. This year, Trinidad and Tobago will be represented by the boys as 16-and-under and 19-and-under teams carry the flag. The teams are hunting gold this year as they have done every year since 2008.

The teams have been preparing for their engagement since February under the eye of head coach Alan Too-a-Foo and assistant coach Daniel Alvarez, himself a current national senior men’s player.

Both coaches believe that there is enough talent in both squads to do well in Willemstad. For Too-a-Foo it is all or nothing and his training regimen reflects this as both teams train morning and evening at the Marlins Aquatics Facility in Westmoorings and are being conditioned with only victory in mind.

The CARIFTA tournament this year will see teams from the Bahamas, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and of course hosts Curacao. T&T has emerged as a powerhouse in regional age-group water polo and have played at a world level, when in 2012 they were represented by an 18-and-under team at the World Games held in Perth, Australia.

The 19-and-under team still has six of those ‘Worlds’ athletes in Johann Callender, Kieron Emmanuel, Sebastian van Reeken, Jonathan Gillette, Adrian Hinds and Justin Bodden.

Those accomplishments were built on the back of the 2008 CARIFTA campaign and Too-a-Foo and Alvarez, who were coach and player then, will sit side by side in Curacao pushing the teams on attempting to achieve the feat again.
