Water polo boys just miss Worlds spot
The Trinidad and Tobago national Under-17 team finished sixth in the Pan American Water Polo Championships in Buenos Aires, failing to secure a World Championship berth by one spot.
In the decisive fifth place playoff for the final spot, T&T were defeated 6-1 by Peru.
On the final day of competition Saturday, and playing in a match in which they played determinedly, the T&T team was able to hold Peru to a goalless scoreline at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Peru scored two goals to T&T’s one, resulting in a 2-1 halftime score. The third quarter again produced a series of good saves, a missed penalty by team T&T and two more goals being scored by Peru who ended the quarter with a growing lead of 4-1.
The fourth quarter saw the young Soca Warriors conceding two more goals while failing to score and losing the battle for the fifth spot which would have secured their berth to the World Juniors in Turkey next year.
“Despite this, this young team shows promise, tenacity and determination and with continued support, the ASATT anticipates that they will make an impact on the world stage,” a media release from the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago stated.
The team was scheduled to return home yesterday.
