Weather dominates Premier Division play

Rain may end up playing a pivotal role in deciding who will win the 2013 Premier Division league competition.

Yesterday, showers washed out day one in four of the five matches that were scheduled for this weekend.

The only game that had any play was at Queen’s Park Oval between defending champions Queen’s Park Cricket Club and First Citizens Clarke Road United, and even that encounter was affected by adverse weather.

Wanderers forfeited their match against PowerGen, who got 24 points to take the lead with two rounds of matches left.

PowerGen are now in a good position to win the title with matches against the other top title contenders, Alescon Comets and Moosai Sports to come.

Elsewhere, rain threatened to keep the Parkites from another clean sweep of domestic titles.

Heading into this weekend’s matches, the Parkites needed to win all their remaining matches and hope the other top contenders drop points.

Yesterday, they were sent in to bat and were 160 for five at stumps. Only 46 overs were possible on the first day of the contest with Akeal Hosein--called up to the national senior team this week--scoring an unbeaten 42 to keep the hosts in the game.

Queen’s Park skipper Justin Guillen also chipped in with 38 while Marlon Barclay added 28.

All matches are scheduled to resume today from 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.
