WHIM survived a late charge from Scarborough before earning a hard fought 72-70 victory on Tuesday night, while Mt St George emerged victors 51-37 over Goodwood in the Tobago zone of the Hoop of Life basketball competition.
Whim began hot. They finished the first quarter leading 19-11 and looked totally in control when holding a 20 point lead at the half. But, in the third quarter, Scarborough began to stage a come back. Led by Kerry Celetine’s 27 points, and 19 from Antoino Roach, the men from town began chipping away at Whim’s lead, which at one stage stood at 30 points.
The fourth quarter was one to savour as the teams battled physically and tactically. Scarborough surged late and almost drew level with a final shot on the buzzer, which was off target. Whim therefore escaped with a two-point victory. Top-scorer on the night was Whim’s Kursyl Vincent with 30 points, while his teammate Hayden Mitchell netted 15 points.
In contrast, on Monday Mt St George won a lackluster affair in which both teams were guilty of poor shooting. Mt St George got off to a flying start and led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. Goodwood offered some resistance in the second quarter, but still trailed at the half 26-19, before Mt St George eventually won an uninspiring victory.
