Wickets for Bishoo after camp
Discarded West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo returned with a vengeance to grab a six-wicket haul in a national 50 overs tournament here after attending a bowling camp with former Pakistan player Saqlain Mushtaq.
Bishoo, who is seeking to regain his spot on the senior regional side, picked up six wickets for 13 runs to lead Berbice to a commanding 10-wicket win over Essequibo on Thursday.
The diminutive Bishoo spun his way through the Essequibo batting lineup as six wickets fell for just 14 runs at one stage.
He was one of several senior and emerging spinners from the Caribbean who benefitted from a spin bowling clinic conducted by off-spinner Mushtaq earlier this month.
West Indies head coach Otis Gibson had said that Bishoo, in particular, was uppermost in his thoughts when he extended the invitation to Saqlain.
“I have been saddened by the way things have gone for Bishoo. Having come into the West Indies team and become ICC Emerging Player-of-the-Year to where he is right now, I strongly felt I needed to get someone over here to give him the support and the belief and I know he has been doing very well,” said Gibson.
“Hopefully, this will be the spark that will get Bishoo back into the frame of mind which he had when he got into the West Indies team and did very well.”
Berbice’s win carries them into tomorrow’s final of the Guyana Cricket Board Inter-county 50 overs tournament final against the defending champions Demerara.
