The Windward Islands revived their Caribbean Twenty20 campaign yesterday with a 42-run win over the Combined Campuses and Colleges in their CT20 match at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain yesterday.
CCC lost their previous two matches and needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive but they could not pull it together against Darren Sammy's side who were also fighting to stay alive after losing their opening match to Jamaica on Wednesday.
Sent in to bat, the Windwards could only muster 129 for seven with Keddy Lesporis smashing 33 off 25 balls and Sammy chipping in with 32 off 28 balls.
At 92 for four after 15 overs, the Windwards should have gotten a few more but 129 was more than enough against a CCC batting line-up that took too many risks too early in the chase and eventually paid the price.
CCC were eventually dismissed for 87 in 18.5 overs.
The "Students" started the chase positively, with Chadwick Walton smashing the first ball by Garey Mathurin over midwicket for six, but he was out in the next over caught at first slip off Sammy. And they were 47 for two after eight overs when wickets really began tumbling.
Sammy led the charge for the Windwards, snatching three for 17 off 3.5 overs, while the spinners finished the job with off-spinner Liam Sebastien taking two for eight, left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin grabbing two for 24 and off-spinner Shane Shillingford finishing with one for 15.
CCC play their final match in Trinidad today against Barbados from 8 p.m. with the "Students" looking for their first win over the Bajans in the shortest form of the game.
The Windwards will close off this leg against the Leeward Islands tomorrow at the Oval from 4 p.m.
