TWO Trinidad and Tobago players combined with foreigners to win medals on Thursday in the World Junior Circuit Table Tennis Tournament in Guatemala. Aaron Wilson and Cuban Livan Martinez made a tremendous comeback to capture the gold medal in the junior event, while Shreya Maharaj and Ting Ting Chen of Taiwan picked up two cadet medals.
After losing the first two singles matches of the under-19 team final, Wilson and Martinez began their incredible revival when they defeated Lamadrid of Chile and Sweden’s Hesselgren 13-11, 11-6, 11-8 in doubles.
Then Martinez, who had lost the opening match against Lamadrid in five games, roared back after losing the first two games to nose out Hesselgren 10-12, 5-11, 11-3, 11-5, 13-11 and level proceedings.
Wilson, who had lost the second match of the fixture in straight set (11-8, 11-7, 11-7) against Hesselgren, then clinched the gold medal with an 11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8 triumph over Lamadrid.
Both teams had played unbeaten in the round-robin phase of the competition, which also included participants from El Salvador and Guatemala.
Maharaj, last year’s top-ranked under-11 player in the country, and Chen collected the silver medal in doubles and bronze in the team event in the under-15 category. The singles draws served off yesterday.
