'Bruce', Ignition get ready for President's Cup clash

By Glen Mohammed

BRUCEONTHELOOSE, who looks set for a third Horse of Year title when the 'delayed' Jetsam Awards ceremony is held at Santa Rosa Park on August 11, toyed with stablemate Odin on Sunday morning over 1,000 metres when the track was reconditioned.

Odin was no match for the grey, who was settled behind him and never came out of cruise control with Nobel Abrego being a passenger. The final 800 metres was recorded in an effortless 49.81, a good sign ahead of his clash with stablemate Ignition Coil in the 1,900-metre President's Cup on July 21.

Trainer Terrence Thomas' importation Golden Dixieland--who could also be in the President's Cup line-up--fired a good 49.59 over 800 metres, but was not as easy as 'Bruce'.

Ignition Coil from the John O'Brien barn on the other hand, turned in a bullet 48.06 over 800 metres and did not look as though he was travelling that fast. Creole Skyline Pigeon, who is pointed for the 1,800-metre Top Of The Class event, also breezed over 1,000 metres with apprentice Kiran Razack in 1:01.12. However, the club's clockers only caught the gelding from the 800-metre pole.

Meanwhile, trainer Harold Chadee, who holds a very strong hand in the upcoming juvenile contest on August 1, breezed most of his babes. Jamaica-bred Zun Zum was better this time around with Perfect Circle and they covered their half-mile spin in a good 52.78. Sstablemate Run Ron who was also in the workout, but was several lengths adrift and clocked a slower 53.95. Chadee also sharpened Ex-Dare To Dream and Ex-Kissable and they turned in a good 52.40 over the 800-metre trip.

Trainer Glenn Mendez, who could be Chadee's nightmare, allowed juveniles Ex-Dixie Glitter and Ex-Local Charmer to coast in an easy 40.28, with the former looking very good. And a three-year-old maiden to keep in mind is Asia. This filly is improving and will take some beating when sent out. Yesterday, Boogie Blues who is now trained by Glenn Mendez paced over 1,000 metres with Direct Injection and he is on course for the President's Cup
