25 To Compete In Chutney Soca Semis

The Screening process for the 50th Anniversary Independence Chutney Soca Monarch took place on Saturday 28th July at the Maracas Night Club in Gulf View.

Forty-six artistes submitted entries for consideration and performed in front of a screening committee using their CD tracks.

The committee was very impressed with the high quality of lyrics and songs in general, and it has been referred to as one of the best crop of songs ever produced for a competition in the Chutney Soca arena.

Kenneth Supersad topped the scores on July 28 with a strong delivery, accompanied by his daughter doing background vocals. There were many other impressive renditions by Rooplal Girdharrie, Soca Elvis, and Chris Garcia just to name a few. 25 artistes now move to the semi-final stage to be held on Saturday at the Gulf City Shopping Complex Atrium area and will be free to the public.

The Grand Final will be held on Saturday August 18 at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

A total of TT$1.25m will be paid to artistes taking part in this special competition, with a first prize of $500,000, 2nd prize of $250,000, and 3rd prize of $150,000. All other finalists will take home $50,000.

Tickets for this event, at just $50.00, will be on sale shortly for the Final.

This event is being produced on behalf of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism, and is sponsored in part by WINTV, WIN 101.1, Black & White, Hennesy, White Oak, Gulf City Limited and Firepower Fireworks.
