Clayton De Freitas Celebrates 50th Birthday At Horizons Art Gallery

The Horizons Art Gallery, Mucurapo Road, St James will on August 28 premiere an exhibition of the recent works of Clayton De Freitas who will also be celebrating his 50th birthday at that time. The Exhibition will continue daily until September 3.

De Freitas was raised in Belmont among gingerbread houses, which played their part in sparking his passion for art. This passion has been a constant element in his life, persisting despite his deteriorated vision in one eye and near blindness in the other.

DeFreitas does social work with drug rehab programmes and 12-step groups in various prisons here in Trinidad. He also carries out art therapy and anger management courses in the prisons. Currently, he is assistant secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society.

DeFreitas has delved into painting with acrylics, watercolours and fabric paints and created drawings in pen and ink. He has touched the hearts of many with his watercolours of old homes and nature scenes through his exhibitions in Trinidad and in the Antilles.

The artist's work has found homes in places such as Montreal, Toronto, England, Egypt, Holland, the Netherlands Antilles, England, Barbados and the United States. DeFreitas has been involved with the curatorship of several art shows in Trinidad including, by request of the Archbishop of Port of Spain, a charity auction of works of fine art in aid of the restoration of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
