Crazy Hatz Galore

By Wayne Bowman wayne.bowman@trinidadexpress.com

The evening sun beat down on the Waterfront Esplanade at the back of the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain as guests and competitors filtered in for the hotel's third annual Crazy Hatz Carnival Party. This fun event sees representatives from various companies and organisations with working relationships competing for prizes, the main one being a weekend for two at the Hyatt Presidential Suite where they will enjoy 24-hour room service.

Roughly eighteen people participated, all of them wearing really zany hats they designed themselves. Some hats were simple while others were very elaborate and featured humourous themes. There were even hats that incorporated modern technology, lighting up and with moving pieces. The competitors went all out to showcase their creativity and win that weekend of pampering at the Hyatt.

Winning the coveted first prize was Rhonda Rampersad from Tracmac with her very colourful hat titled, Carnival to Easter. This presentation was in the form of an Easter bonnet that not only featured coloured eggs and Easter bunnies, but also elements of the Trinbago Carnival including bright colours, glitter and various Carnival motifs.

Another hat that grabbed people's attention was one titled, Tantana worn by Renata Singh who designed her presentation around a Peter Minshall theme and building a mini Saga Boy and mini Tan Tan on top her hat. Singh also rigged the structure so she could move the limbs of the dolls as she danced around on stage.

One of the evening's most funny hats was one titled Gas Brains that was in the shape of an engine block with two rims. Then there was the hat titled, Carnival Caroni Fusion created by Edelle Mannette. This quite elaborate hat featured feathers, netting and even a little caiman. The hats were judged by Peter Ray Blood, Natacha Jones and Hyatt Human Resources Director, Aka Ali. Nikki Crosby served as hostess and after the competition the guests were entertained by Shurwayne Winchester and YOU.
