Helicopter video shows cops in action on highway

THE National Operations Centre (NOC) on Thursday released dramatic helicopter camera footage showing a car being intercepted on the Solomon Hochoy Highway, and a man being detained.

The footage was captured by a National Security helicopter which was part of  the law enforcement response.

The scene played out mid-morning along the Solomon Hochoy Highway when a combined team of police officers from the Southern and Central Police Division, aided by aerial support, acted on an all-points bulletin.

According to a statement which accompanied the footage: "In the continued effort of inter-agency coordination and joint support, utilizing the assets of the Ministry of National Security, the National Operations Centre (NOC) wishes to advise that on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 10.35 a.m. the NOC and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Central Division, rapidly responded with aerial support via the NOC Air Division", read the statement. "This situational awareness was coordinated and monitored at the NOC Headquarters. The NOC Air Division helicopter was deployed and embarked TTPS Central Division officers in a rapid response to the call and, utilizing communication between the TTPS officers on board and the ground units, were able to successfully intercept the vehicle".

Police later said they received a call from an official from a bank in San Fernando that a female customer appeared distressed as she attempted to withdraw a large sum of money.

Officers were told that the woman was directed to make her withdrawal in her home branch in Couva, and she left in a white Mitsubishi Lancer.

A party of police officers of the Southern and Central Division Task Force, San Fernando and Couva CIDs, Highway Patrol Unit, Rapid Response Unit, supported by helicopters of the National Helicopter Services responded to the call.

Police spotted the vehicle headed north along the highway and caused traffic to come to a halt as the vehicle was intercepted.

A woman and a child was taken out of the vehicle, and a man was detained for questioning.

Police said that the woman claimed she was not in danger. Officers said she refused to give police a statement and refused to be taken for medical attention. The man was subsequently released.
