Barbados Fertility Centre (BFC) snaps up the Joint Commission International (JCI) gold seal of approval for upholding the highest standards of patient care and outstanding laboratory services.

Every two years the JCI, a US health facility accreditation programme, grants the gold seal of approval to those who uphold the highest standards of patient care. And this year, for the third consecutive time, the fertility centre has achieved this prestigious medical award.

For patients visiting the facility, either in Trinidad or in Barbados, it means they are being treated in a medical establishment that has undergone vigorous testing and is part of an elite group of clinics.

"We are very proud to have received this award. It reinforces the excellent long-term reputation that Barbados Fertility Centre has earned," said Dr Juliet Skinner, consultant gynaecologist and head of the facility. "We all work hard to provide our patients with the finest experience possible, and it's satisfying to know others appreciate our efforts."

The award, which was announced just in time for BFCs annual fertility conference carded for March 22 at the MovieTowne Conference Centre, is excellent news for the region, especially in Barbados where the facility continues to boost medical tourism.

"The accreditation process itself is an essential part of what we do at BFC as it ensures we improve on the quality of care given to patients, invest in new and improved quality measurement systems so that we can provide the best treatment for continued high IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) success rates, Dr Skinner added.

Since opening in 2002 in Barbados, BFC has increased the number of couples conceiving through the creation of a stress reduced environment for couples undergoing IVF treatment year after year with a 71 per cent success rate.

BFC is one of the first IVF units in the world to offer a combination of medical tradition and a holistic approach by treating couples both mentally and physically at their on-site wellness centre Life Wellness Centre.

Couples who choose to undergo the Healthy Mind and Body programme can benefit from massage, reflexology, acupuncture, nutrition advice and counselling to cope with the whole IVF procedure. BFC believes that their approach of allowing couples to de-stress whilst undergoing treatment is why they are so successful.
