Aside from the arrival of the Holidays, December is an exciting time of year in the design world because it's always when the Pantone Colour of the Year is announced. The 2013 Colour of the Year is Emerald Green!!
For all you who are not familiar with the importance of this announcement, Pantone LLC, is owned by X-Rite and is the global authority on colour. They provide the system that standardises the professional use of colour for all of the design industries. The announcement of PANTONE® 17-5641 Emerald will shape the tone of the colour year to come across fashion, home, automotive and many other style-driven industries.
According to Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, green is the most abundant hue in nature. The human eye actually sees more of it than any other colour in the spectrum. So of course one could say…this colour choice came naturally. No pun intended. Pantone characterises Emerald 17-5641 "a lively, radiant, lush green, as the Colour of the Year for 2013".
I'm thrilled that Emerald was chosen, and as a certified colour consultant I love all the possibilities for integrating that colour into the home. I have always had a crush on Emerald Green probably because I myself am obsessed with jewel tones.
Most people won't be clamouring to paint their living room walls in emerald green, as it's a pretty dark and intense colour. That doesn't mean you can't use it to glam up a room, if you are judicious in how you apply it and other jewel tones. It is possible to use strong colours like emerald green without overwhelming a room.
A feature wall in a dining room can be elegant and inviting. As well, a powder room is always a great space to be daring! If you're looking for ways to introduce this new colour into your home without painting your walls or without overindulging, try something on a smaller scale such as toss pillows, accent furniture or accessories.
Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. It's also the colour of growth, renewal and prosperity – no other colour conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.
What does this mean for your home in the coming year? Whatever you like! It's not about the forecasters or doing what trendsetters say you should. It's about influence, how it's used, what makes it work, and drawing from what the experts have spent so much time and effort narrowing into a few selections.
